Padar: a short climb at sunrise, with the whole bay below it

Updated 24 October 2026

The Padar island hike for beginners is a moderate climb that reaches the main viewpoint in 25 to 45 minutes. Raffles Cruise makes it at sunrise on day two of every overnight trip, before breakfast, and after breakfast on the 05:00 full day. July sunrise is 06:18.

Plan the Padar morning

Padar on each sailing

Day two opens with Padar. The walk comes before breakfast on the 2-day, 3-day and 4-day routes. Pickup the day before was 09:30. Where the boat lies for the night is for the captain to decide that day.

On the full day the order differs. Pickup is at 05:00, the boat sails, breakfast follows and the Padar walk comes after it, so the light is already high. Treat that one as a daytime climb and not a sunrise.

The table gives the computed sunrise at the Padar viewpoint for each month. It is a calendar fact, accurate to a few minutes, and no promise about the minute you reach the top.

The ridge walk and the light on it

Padar is a viewpoint and not a beach. At the top the ridge gives onto three bays with sand of three colours. That view is the reason for the morning. There are no dragons on Padar.

Two planning ranges come from the park data. Boarding the tender happens an hour before the sun rises, 65 minutes ahead by the park notes, then 25 to 45 minutes of climbing follow. The upper ridge takes longer. In July the sun rises at 06:18, in November at 05:31, so the start moves through the year.

A headtorch helps in the first stretch. Loose, steep ground makes this a moderate climb. A beginner takes the main viewpoint and stops there, which is a complete walk.

Packing for the climb

Sandals will not do. The bring list asks for shoes for trekking, and Padar is the walk where that line earns its place. Closed shoes with a grip handle the loose path.

Carry a small backpack with water, sunblock and a hat for the walk down, when the sun is higher. A headtorch comes from you, since the boat does not supply one. Bring your own. Phones are the usual camera here, and a strap is worth having on a slope.

Wear swimwear under your clothes only if the next stop is a swim. On the overnight routes it is Pink Beach, with breakfast first.

What entry to Padar costs

Ticket, foreign visitor: IDR 250,000. Ticket, Indonesian citizen: IDR 50,000 on a weekday, IDR 75,000 at weekends and public holidays. The fare never includes either.

Padar limits visitors per day by time session, and that limit has been revised more than once this year. We register you by name and passport number and check the cap for your date. Ranger and pier fees are extra, and they change.

The park tickets page has the full tariff, the calculator for your party and the registration steps.

FAQ

How long is the Padar walk?

Climbing to the main viewpoint takes between 25 and 45 minutes. Going on up the ridge adds time. The tender leaves 65 minutes before sunrise. The captain and the crew set the call on the day.

Is Padar suitable for beginners?

Yes, if you stop at the main viewpoint. Moderate in difficulty, short in length, loose and steep underfoot in places. A guest with weak knees or a fear of slopes takes it slowly or waits on the boat.

What shoes for Padar?

Closed shoes with a grip. The bring list asks for sandals or shoes for trekking, and Padar is the stop where sandals are the wrong choice. Loose ground and steep sections punish a flat sole.

Is sunrise on Padar guaranteed?

No. The sunrise table is a computed calendar time, and cloud, the sea and the captain's call decide the morning. We promise the walk on the day itself and no minute of arrival at the top.

Is Padar on the full day?

Yes, after breakfast. Full-day guests are collected at 05:00, sail, eat breakfast, walk Padar, lunch, swim at Pink Beach, walk Komodo and are home in Labuan Bajo that day. It is a daytime walk, not a sunrise one.
