Entering Indonesia, reaching Labuan Bajo, and what to carry

Updated 24 October 2026

Most visitors on a Labuan Bajo Komodo trip clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, often on a visa on arrival, and then take a domestic flight. The tables below hold the entry, flight, money and health facts for Raffles Cruise; confirm entry rules on the official immigration site.

Getting into Indonesia: visa and entry

The table below holds the entry facts. Most visitors clear immigration at the first Indonesian airport they land at, Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, and not in Labuan Bajo. A visa on arrival, or an e-VoA, covers 30 days for many nationalities. Others apply in advance on the immigration site.

Three items catch people out. Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity after you arrive, and blank pages. An onward or return ticket is needed. And the arrival card is compulsory, free, and filled in online within 72 hours before you land.

Treat the fee and the list of eligible countries as facts to verify. Rules and prices change, and the table shows the date it was last checked. Look at the official immigration site first, and book flights afterwards. This page cannot do that for you.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
e-VoAThe same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days.
VoA / e-VoA priceIDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly.

PassportValid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
Onward ticketProof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA
All Indonesia arrival cardFree and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration.
Arriving in Labuan BajoMost visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight
Bali tourist levyIDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee.

Reaching Labuan Bajo by air

From Komodo International Airport, code LBJ, the harbour is 2 to 3 km away, around 10 minutes by car. Most flights arrive from Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya, and a few feed in from Lombok and Kupang. The table gives the flight times and the airlines that fly each route.

Schedules change, so check yours when you buy the ticket. Land the day before sailing: we ask for it, and a delayed flight on the morning of a 09:30 pickup leaves nothing in hand.

Three-day and four-day trips finish in Labuan Bajo around midday on the last day. Book your onward flight after 14:00. Flight tickets are not something we sell, though we advise on them.

Cash, cards and the rupiah

Your fare is settled with us by card link, bank transfer or one of the other routes on the invoice. The cash question starts after that. The table lists the banks with machines near the harbour and at arrivals, the withdrawal limits and what a card costs you at the till.

Take cash before you board. Neither the national park nor the islands have a cash machine, and the bring list includes emergency cash. Crew gratuities sit outside the fare too, and the table shows the range that guests commonly leave, which is a guide and never a rule.

The rupiah moves against the dollar and the euro, so the figures in the table are a mid-2026 guide. Our own fares are in rupiah, with a dollar figure beside them.

CurrencyIndonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026
ATMsBCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board.
ATM limitsIDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges
Cards or cashCards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash.
TippingAppreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range.

Phone signal at sea; local Wi-Fi on board

There is local Wi-Fi on board; the connection depends on mobile coverage and is not promised, so plan for gaps. Download maps, tickets and anything you need to read before you board.

On land, a registered SIM or an eSIM gives you the best chance of a connection. The table names the network with the widest coverage at sea and explains the registration, which needs your passport.

If your work cannot wait three days, tell your office the signal comes and goes. If it must be daily, the hotel night before is the place to finish it.

No connection speed is promised, and this page names none.

SIM cardsEvery SIM must be registered; visitors register with a passport
Best networkTelkomsel has the widest coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore; signal is still patchy between the islands
eSIMInstall it before you fly and activate it on landing; a typical plan of 25 GB for 30 days costs about USD 15 to 22

Health: shots, water and medicines

Tap water in Labuan Bajo is not safe to drink. Use sealed bottled or filtered water, including for brushing teeth if your stomach is sensitive. Soft drinks are included, and bottled water is not listed, so ask us what to expect.

The table lists the mosquito-borne diseases present, the two hospitals in town, the emergency numbers and the pharmacy position. Bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home, because the pharmacies in town carry a limited range. The bring list includes personal medicines and sunblock.

No vaccine appears as compulsory in the entry facts we hold. Take advice from your own doctor or a travel clinic before you fly. Travel insurance is outside the fare, and cover for medical care and evacuation is worth having.

Rules at the harbour and in the park

At the gangway you look for the hull painted RAFFLES, with two masts and two cabin decks. Before that, two offices decide your day. Each boat's sailing permit comes from the harbour master's office, and access to the park is controlled by the park office.

A boat bound for the park needs an electronic boarding pass for every passenger, with each name matching the passenger list. We register you from the passport names you send. The harbour guideline further asks for life jackets and life rafts for all aboard, and for a weather check before any sailing permit.

The table lists recent closures. Read them as history and not as a forecast: they show that Komodo and Padar can close at short notice for waves and wind, and that the captain's stop order is a real decision. Park tickets have a page of their own.

Who decidesThe harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park
Boarding passPassengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you
Safety on boardThe harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit
Recent closures1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open.

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Indonesia?

For many nationalities, 30 days are granted through a visa on arrival or an e-VoA. Citizens of ASEAN countries enter visa-free, and others apply beforehand. The table lists the rules and the date it was checked. Fees and lists change, so verify on the official immigration site ahead of your flight.

Is tap water safe in Labuan Bajo?

No. Use sealed bottled or filtered water for drinking. Soft drinks are included during the trip and bottled water is not listed, so ask us what is served aboard and carry what you need.

Will my phone work aboard?

Partly. There is local Wi-Fi on board; the connection depends on mobile coverage and is not promised. A Telkomsel SIM or eSIM gives the widest coverage offshore. Download what you need before you board.

Which currency do I carry?

Indonesian rupiah. Our fares are in rupiah with a dollar figure beside them. Take cash before you board, because the park and the islands have no machines, and keep emergency cash in a small waterproof bag.

Do I need vaccinations for Komodo?

No vaccine is listed as compulsory in the entry facts we hold. The table does name mosquito-borne diseases and rabies as present. Your own doctor or a travel clinic knows your history, so ask them what suits you, and ask weeks before the flight.
