Raffles Cruise
A confidence ladder for people who swim a little or not at all
Updated 24 October 2026
Yes, with a life jacket and the crew's say on when you go in. Non-swimmers snorkel in Komodo on Raffles Cruise by starting at the shallow reef, taking the Manta Point drift only with a guide in the water, and using the paddleboards to stay on top. A Java seat is IDR 8,750,000 (≈ USD 537).
The short answer, and the one condition
Yes. A guest who swims a little, or not at all, can snorkel on this route. The condition is one sentence long: a life jacket is worn by anyone who is not a confident swimmer, and the crew decides when and where you go in.
The route works as three rungs. The first is the shallow reef, where the water is 1 to 5 m deep or a little more and the current is mild. The second is a life jacket with a guide in the water. The third is Manta Point, where a strong current carries you along the reef.
You can stop on any rung. Staying aboard is always allowed, and the crew decides when and where you go in. We claim no swimming instruction and no lifesaving certification. What the crew gives you is judgement about the water on the day.
Rung one: the ladder and the shallow reef
How you get into the water is the crew's call on the day. The ladder, platform or entry point is on request, so we describe none. If stepping into deep water is the worry, tell us before you sail, and we ask the crew and answer in writing.
The shallow reef is where you begin. At Taka Makassar a crescent of sand sits inside shallow reef, 1 to 5 m deep, with a mild current; the stop is rated easy. At low tide the sandbar shows. At high tide it is under water, and nobody walks on it.
Pink Beach is the second shallow stop: reef close to the shore, 1 to 8 m deep, mild current, easy. Sebayur is a beach island with reef near the beach, 2 to 10 m deep. On the 3D2N, Sebayur and Taka Makassar both fall on day one, either side of Manta Point.
Rung two: a life jacket and a guide in the water
In the water, you wear snorkelling gear and a life jacket, both part of the fare. A jacket helps you float, keeps your face up and your breathing easy, and lets you rest without kicking.
On the open trip, the seat carries the local guide, who goes in with the party. On a charter a guide is an add-on, quoted apart on request; a party with weak swimmers should ask for one in the first message, or stay aboard at Manta Point. The crew decides when and where you go in either way.
Practise at a shallow stop before you need it. Hold the snorkel in your mouth, put your face in, and breathe slowly for a minute. Look at the bottom, not the horizon. If your breathing runs short, raise your head and signal to the crew.
Rung three: the drift at Manta Point
Manta Point is rated moderate. It has a strong current and water 3 to 15 m deep. Confident swimmers do well there, and a life jacket is advised. The party moves along the reef with the current and is not held at one spot.
Crew and guide pick the moment to go in from the tide and the current. The snorkel itself runs 30 to 60 minutes. You do not swim against the current. You float along the reef with it, beside the guide, and the boat follows. On a charter without a guide, this is the stop to watch from the deck.
Manta Point is on the route. Whether mantas are there is the sea's decision. A guest who prefers not to go in watches from the boat, and loses nothing on the rest of the day.
Staying on top: the two paddleboards
Two stand-up paddleboards are aboard, and on the 3D2N the Pink Beach stop offers snorkelling or paddle boarding at Long Beach. On the third morning, Kelor is free time to walk, swim or paddle board.
So there is a way to enjoy a stop without putting your face in the water. A paddleboard rides over the same reef, and you see it through the clear shallows. Two boards for the whole party means short turns, and the crew sets them.
Wear the life jacket on the board as well. The crew decides when and where the boards go out, and the same sea rules apply.
Telling the crew before you board
Our WhatsApp message asks how many in your party do not dive or are not confident swimmers. Answer in plain words: cannot swim, swim a few strokes, swim well. We pass the answer to the crew before you reach the harbour.
On the day, tell the crew again at the 09:30 pickup, and once more at the first stop. Repeating it costs nothing. A crew that knows who needs the jacket first can fit it before the water, not after.
That is the whole ladder. Start at the shallow reef, take a jacket, go in with a guide, and choose the paddleboard or the deck whenever you like. A Java seat is IDR 8,750,000 (≈ USD 537) per person, and two guests on the whole boat pay IDR 115,000,000 (≈ USD 7,055) for three days.
FAQ
Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel?
Not to begin. A life jacket helps you float, and the shallow stops start you in 1 to 5 m of water with a mild current. The crew decides when and where you go in. Manta Point asks more: go in only with a guide in the water, or stay aboard.
Can I wear a life jacket while snorkelling?
Yes, and a guest who cannot swim well should wear one. Life jackets are on board and part of the fare. Sizes are on request, so tell us the ages and weights of children and we confirm what is aboard in writing.
What if I panic in the water?
Raise your head and signal. The crew decides when and where you go in, and calls the time. A guest who feels unsure at any rung gets out and stays on the boat, with no explanation owed. Tell the crew before you go in.
Is Manta Point safe for a weak swimmer?
Manta Point is rated moderate, with a strong current. A weak swimmer goes in only in a life jacket, beside the guide, when the crew choose the moment. On a charter without a guide, or whenever in doubt, a weak swimmer watches from the boat.
Can I skip a snorkel stop?
Yes. You can sit any stop out without touching the rest of the day, and no one will ask why. Rest on deck, take a paddleboard at Pink Beach or Kelor, or join the next stop. Tell the crew, and they decide when and where you go in next.
